YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS. The 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) will open on Tuesday 17 September 2019. The first day of the high-level General Debate will be Tuesday, 24 September 2019. The Prime Minister of Armenia will also participate.

The President-Elect of the 74th session is H.E. Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, of Nigeria, was elected on 4 June 2019. Professor Tijjani Muhammad-Bande has had an outstanding career as a scholar and diplomat. As Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, he worked with colleagues from all regions of the world to achieve common objectives. He served as the Vice-President of the General Assembly during the 71st session.

This year, in addition to the general debate, world leaders will participate in five summits or high-level meetings to boost action on climate change and accelerate progress on sustainable development, aimed at securing healthy, peaceful and prosperous lives for all.

The high-level week (23 – 27 September) provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate the value of multilateralism and highlight increased ambition and accelerated action on UN priorities, under the tagline “Action for People and Planet: 1 Week - 5 Summits - 17 Goals.

Climate Action Summit 2019 (23 September)

The UN Secretary-General is convening a summit, under the slogan “A Race We Can Win. A Race We Must Win,” to mobilize political and economic energy at the highest levels to advance climate action for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and many of the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ARMENPRESS was informed from the UN Office on Yerevan.

High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (23 September)

The first-ever High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage convened by the President of the General Assembly will launch new efforts to provide access for all to affordable, inclusive and resilient health systems. 

Sustainable Development Goals Summit (24 - 25 September)

The SDG Summit – the first High-level Political Forum under the auspices of the General Assembly -- will allow world leaders and other stakeholders to demonstrate how they intend to accelerate action to transform our societies and economies.

High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development (26 September)

The High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development will bring together leaders from Government, business and the financial sector to help unlock the resources and partnerships needed and accelerate progress.

High-level Review of Progress on SAMOA Pathway (27 September)

Five years after an ambitious agreement – the SAMOA Pathway -- to support sustainable development in small island developing states, the High-Level Review will discuss progress on combating the devastating impact of climate change, building economic and environmental resilience, and other challenges.

SDG Media Zone (21-27 September)

The SDG Media Zone will bring transformative ideas and change-making initiatives to audiences at the United Nations and around the world. During the high-level week, the SDG Media Zone will host impactful, dynamic and in-depth conversations with decision-makers, influencers and media partners – live-streamed on UN WebTV and promoted by partnering media organizations.

 Annual Treaty Event (24 – 27 September)

The annual Treaty Event is an opportunity for Member States to sign, ratify or accede to multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary-General. It is focused on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable

Development through the multilateral treaty framework, addressing social, economic and environmental challenges, and work towards peaceful and inclusive societies and a clean planet for sustainable development.

High-level Event on the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child - CRC30 (25 September)

The high-level commemorative event will take place in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at UN HQ. The CRC30 Report on Changing Childhoods: 30 years back, 30 years ahead will be launched in November.
