Armenia’s Kurdish community celebrates Nawroz

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, ARMENPRESS. The Kurdish community of Armenia gathered at the Arno Babajanyan Philharmonic Hall in Yerevan to celebrate Nawroz.

Head of the Kurdish community of Armenia, Member of Parliament Knyaz Hasanov delivered remarks, congratulating on the holiday. He said that Nawroz is one of the most important holidays that roots back to pagan times.

“Today, Kurds around the world are starting common fires wherever they live, in settlements, in villages and cities, and all day they dance and rejoice around this fire,” Hasanov said, referring to the traditional Nawroz fire.

“Then, when the struggle of the Kurdish people began under the leadership of our leader Abdulah Ojalan, Nawroz was re-interpreted, re-developed and became a national-liberation movement of the Kurdish people. In Turkey, Nawroz celebrations are banned for the Kurds, however our people do not fear anything, millions have gone out to celebrate and congratulate their national holiday,” he said.

On March 21, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the Armenian Kurdish community on Nawruz.

“I cordially congratulate the representatives of the Kurdish community in Armenia on Nowruz, the New Year.

Nowruz is one of the oldest and most popular national holidays of the Kurds. It coincides with the spring equinox and is perceived as a symbol of nature awakening and the beginning of the New Year.

Let this spring holiday be a fresh start on the way to materializing your dreams, as a symbol of new life for our Kurdish friends, who are part of Armenia’s fraternal family of equal nations.

Let the New Year be a year of peace, solidarity, new achievements and every success. I wish the Kurdish community of Armenia prosperity, happiness and perseverance: together, we must build a free, fair and prosperous country for us all”, Pashinyan said.
