Women’s role in Armenia must be re-defined, says ruling faction MP

YEREVAN, MARCH 8, ARMENPRESS. According to Lilit Makunts, leader of the ruling My Step faction of the Armenian parliament, the shortcomings of women get stronger criticism than those of men.

Makunts made the remarks during the Equal Opportunities Fair event on March 8 – Women’s Day.

“First of all we have an objective of redefining women’s role. In conservative societies it is rather difficult for women to realize their potential, especially when this refers to public activities. Things that aren’t even noticed in case of men get huge criticism and blame in case of women’s slightest mistakes. Therefore, we are expected to be perfect,” she told reporters.

The event was organized by the Young European Ambassadors initiative.

Andranik Shirinyan, a member of the initiative, said the participation of women lawmakers at the event has a special purpose – to show that women are involved in decision-making processes in the country.

During the event the participants discussed women’s issues and ways of solving them.
