‘I have no personal problem with Robert Kocharyan: Criminal cases are result of thorough investigative work’ – NSS Director

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 21, ARMENPRESS. Director of the National Security Service of Armenia Artur Vanetsyan assures that no political persecution can be carried out against 2nd President Robert Kocharyan and his family members, reports Armenpress.

“There is no such thing, and filing a suit against me is the right of every citizen, the court will decide whether we are guilty or not. There is no plan of political persecution at all, but as for Sedrak Kocharyan [son of Robert Kocharyan], we have released a statement on that”, the NSS Director told reporters after today’s Cabinet meeting.

He stated that the presumption of innocence in connection with Sedrak Kocharyan has not been violated, “the statement mentions the factors which served a base to file a criminal case and press charges”.

Vanetsyan said a thorough criminal case has been filed over money laundering, but didn’t provide any other detail.

“I have no personal problem against the Kocharyan family. Robert Kocharyan has been the 2nd President of Armenia, has carried out many positive works during his activities, has been the 1st President of Artsakh, and I, as an officer, an NSS officer, can not have any personal problem with that family. The criminal cases are a result of comprehensive operative and investigative work during which several factors have been revealed, and their summary led to the fact that there is a crime, and criminal case has been filed. Please, I ask you not to personalize this issue”, he said.

Robert Kocharyan’s son Sedrak Kocharyan has been charged with money laundering and tax evasion. Signature on not leaving the country has been selected as a precautionary measure against him.

2nd President Robert Kocharyan is remanded into custody. He has been charged over the 2008 March 1 case.
