Negotiation process for NK conflict settlement at recovery stage, says political scientist

YEREVAN, JANUARY 30, ARMENPRESS. Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan says attempts are being made to recover the Minsk Group process.

“This situation is linked with the change of power in Armenia. On the hand, this leadership is trying to enter into the Karabakh conflict and start somehow impact the Minsk Co-Chairs, on the other hand Azerbaijan is trying to run a policy aimed at improving its image. If we look back, we can see that different statements are made from Azerbaijan, some of them are joint statements, such as preparing the population to peace and etc.”, Iskandaryan told reporters.

Commenting on the informal meetings between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the political scientist said he already sees Pashinyan-Aliyev official meeting process.

“I cannot say to what extent it will be successful, but that meeting preparations are already being done. It’s also clear that a meeting of the foreign ministers will take place soon”, he said.

Iskandaryan noted that in order to continue the negotiation process in the right direction it is necessary to reduce the degree of violence or reach it to zero in general.

“Today we see that the situation in the border is relatively calm. I cannot imagine the degree of stability of that situation, I don’t think that stability will last long. We don’t see statements by Azerbaijan on making a mutual concession, their position is quite concrete. But the Armenians’ position is completely different which doesn’t correspond with the Azerbaijani one”, the political scientist stated.
