Putin showed principled stance by visiting Tsitsernakaberd on 100th anniversary of Armenian
Genocide – Russian MP

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS. Russia is ready to contribute to easing the existing tension in the Armenian-Turkish relations, Russian State Duma lawmaker Konstantin Zatulin said during a video conference in Sputnik News, reports Armenpress. “We have supported the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols. The United States was the initiator of signing them. It was important for Barack Obama to provide his support to the rapprochement of the Armenian-Turkish relations in order to avoid his promise on recognizing the Armenian Genocide made during the pre-election campaign which he didn’t keep”, Zatulin said.

He reminded that after the signing of the protocols Erdogan violated the process preventing the further progress of the protocols, especially when the signing of the document was viewed as a betrayal in Azerbaijan. “After this the Armenian-Turkish relations remain in the frozen point. We do not support this. Unfortunately, there is a mutual connection, any action of the Turkish side is negatively reacted by Azerbaijan”, the Russian lawmaker said.

He noted that Turkey has historically been and today as well  is a difficult partner for Russia. Zatulin said at present the Russian-Turkish relations move forward smoothly. In particular, there have been some tensions over Russia’s official stance on the Armenian Genocide. “Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Tsitsernakaberd on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide where he delivered speech. Already during that time the Turkish side was making hints that by understanding your stance we expect that the Russian President will not personally participate in that. But Putin demonstrated principality on this matter. After that the Russian-Turkish relations worsened the culmination of which was the Russian jet crash”, the MP said.

As for the Russian-Turkish current relations, Zatulin said today both Russia and Turkey try to receive benefit from the cooperation by this increasing their role in the region and across the world.

“I personally don’t think that the development of Russian-Turkish relations is guaranteed. I do not consider Turkey as Russia’s strategic partner, I undoubtedly see the difference between Russia-Armenia and Turkey-Russia partnering relations”, he stated.
