Armenia expects genocide recognition by Latvia – Sharmazanov

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 16, ARMENPRESS. The delegation led by Vice President of the National Assembly of Armenia Eduard Sharmazanov met with the head of Latvia-Armenia parliamentary friendship group Sergey Potapkin.

During the meeting the members of the delegation highlighted the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation and activation of mutual visits by friendship groups in further deepening Armenian-Latvian relations.

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the parliament of Armenia, the Vice President of the National Assembly of Armenia expressed satisfaction over the organization of an exhibition dedicated to the Armenian Genocide at the national gallery of Latvia.

Sharmazanov also thanked Potapkin for participation in the global forum “Against the Crime of Genocide”.

During the meeting the sides referred to the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide and the settlement process of Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

“Some high ranking Latvian official sometimes make announcements on Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement that do not correspond to the friendship of our peoples. We expect that announcements that do not contradict the official EU position will be made. Everyone should realize that the issue cannot be solved without the right of the people of Artsakh to self-determination.

“We positively assess the announcement of the friendship group ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and expect that the group will launch a procedure iin the parliament of Latvia for the condemnation of the Armenian Genocide”, Sharmazanov said.

Referring to Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Sergey Potapkin noted that it should be settled based the tree well-known principles and their position should be in line with the position of the OSCE Minsk Group.
