Saroyan’s “Cave Dwellers” staged at Goy Theater

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 14, ARMENPRESS. The talented mind of well-known American-Armenian writer and playwright William Saroyan is on display in the Goy Theater’s staging of “The Cave Dwellers.” With support from the U.S. Embassy in Armenia, the Theater is bringing to Armenian audiences, for the very first time, this fable during the holiday season, ARMENPRESS was informed from the U/S. Embassy in Armenia.

“William Saroyan is the perfect example of a person who, inhabiting two worlds, American and Armenian, understood that we are all connected, regardless of where we come from,” said U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills, Jr. “Saroyan’s play underlines that a compassionate heart carries people even through dark times.”

The play tells the allegorical story of several characters who are together in an abandoned theater building, which is facing imminent demolition. With its heartwarming moments of sentimentality amidst a bleak setting, the story reminds us of our common humanity.

“This performance is dedicated to the 110th birthday of William Saroyan, trumpet herald of love and kindness. The world is so much in need of love and kindness. In this harsh reality of the civilization the dwellers of the cave, a group of misfits in an abandoned theater to be demolished soon, are not embittered or desperate. These characters are full of life. They preach for love. And love responds to them: a baby is born. Young ones meet each other,” said Arthur Sahakyan, Art Director of Goy Theater.

Performances will take place December 14th, 16th, and 19th; and the play will become a permanent part of the Goy Theater’s repertoire. More performances will be announced in 2018.
