‘Modern day heroes who put themselves at risk’ – International media coverage of ‘Aurora Prize’

YEREVAN, MAY 29, ARMENPRESS. For already the second year the international media widely cover the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and the awarding ceremony that was held in Yerevan, capital of Armenia, on May 28, reports Armenpress.

Associated Press writes ‘an American doctor, working for years in Sudan’s region affected by war, was awarded with the $1 Million Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity’.

ABC News writes ‘an American doctor who has spent years working in a fighting-ravaged region of Sudan has been awarded the $1.1-million Aurora Prize for exceptional humanitarianism. The prize includes $100,000 for Catena and $1 million for him to donate to organizations of his choice’.

Irish Examiner quoted George Clooney’s words: “We all have a role in addressing these global challenges.We all have a responsibility, each of us individually.We have to be engaged”.

Belfast Telegraph also made a reference to Clooney’s message, stating that the ‘Aurora finalists were “modern day heroes” who had put themselves at risk’.

Charles Aznavour announced the name of the laureate of Aurora Prize 2017 at Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex. The $1 Million Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity was awarded tonight to Dr. Tom Catena, a Catholic missionary from Amsterdam, New York who has saved thousands of lives as the sole doctor permanently based in Sudan’s war-ravaged Nuba Mountains where humanitarian aid is restricted. The Aurora Prize, granted by the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors, was announced at a ceremony in Yerevan, Armenia. He was selected as the 2017 Aurora Prize Laureate from more than 550 nominations submitted from 66 countries.
