Armenians and Greeks are united in fight against genocide: Vice-Speaker Sharmazanov

YEREVAN, MAY 19, ARMENPRESS. Lawmakers of Armenia’s Parliament led by newly elected Vice-Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial on the occasion of Remembrance Day of the Pontian Greek Genocide on May 19, reports Armenpress.

Margarit Yesayan, Gagk Melikyan, Tachat Vardapetayn and others were among the MPs.

They were accompanied by representatives of Greek communities of various provinces of Armenia. The officials and community representatives laid flowers at the memorial by paying homage to the memory of the genocide victims with a moment of silence.

Vice-Speaker Sharmazanov said Armenians and Greeks are united in fight against genocide.

“Today is May 19: the whole civilized world remembers the victims of the Pontian Greek Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey and then in the Kemalist Turkey, remembers how hundreds of thousands of Greeks became victims of the genocidal policy of young Turks and later the Kemalist Turks. Cyprus and Greece are among the unique countries that criminalized the denial of the Armenian Genocide, and the Parliaments of Artsakh and Armenia unanimously condemned the Greek Genocide. We will win in this fight since our fight is for the sake of our Christian faith, sacred homeland and the Armenian-Greek friendship. I believe Turkey’s denial will face a fiasco since the Washington events once again showed that Turkey has not been changed, it runs the same policy. Almost nothing has changed between Erdogan and Ataturk: they are the bearers of the same criminal denialist policy”, Sharmazanov said.

Chairman of the Union of Greek NGOs in Armenia Arkadi Khitarov said there are few people with Greek origin in Armenia, over 2000-2500. “Today the representatives of Greek communities of Gyumri, Vanadzor and other places are with us. I think there is no need to explain Armenia what is genocide. The fact that we remember this day here is also a symbolic”, he said.
