'No serious post-election developments will happen'- political analyst weighs in on Yerevan
election

YEREVAN, MAY 15, ARMENPRESS. No serious post-election development will happen after the Yerevan City Council election, just like after the parliamentary elections of Armenia, political analyst Alexander Iskandaryan told a press conference.

“If there is increase of discontent, then rallies will be held, if there is no increase, then the probability that rallies can achieve something decreases. Discontent happens when people realize that they’ve been cheated. This feeling is absent now, nobody is talking about violations. Now they talk about material interest. In this event, who has to go out and protest? If the citizen has agreed that his yard gets asphalted or has taken money and voted, why does he have to go out and protest, for what?”, he said.

Asked by a reporter if the July 2016 event, when gunmen stormed a police station, is probable to be repeated, Iskandaryan mentioned that it isn’t ruled out, and no large masses are needed for it.

According to him , perhaps there are some emotional people who might wanna try to solve an issue in that way. In order to prevent such events, according to the political analyst, serious work is necessary in the social level, economic reforms are needed.

“It is possible to be done, but these are issues which aren’t solved in a day. Years are required for this. By the way, it’s not true that change doesn’t happen. Look at the political elite, it has significantly transformed. The events which we were seeing two years ago, no longer exist today. New faces have appeared, younger and more educated”, he said.

He noted that the Prime Minister’s factor is big in de-escalating the situation. For the first time, people have hope of change due to Karen Karapetyan’s personality and character.
