Escape of Arsen Voskanyan from rebel captivity tops Columbian media

YEREVAN, APRIL 26, ARMENPRESS. Russian NTV channel has prepared reportage on Arsen Voskanyan, an Armenian living in Moscow, who recently escaped from Colombian guerrilla army’s captivity injuring 5 rebels. “Armenpress” reports the story of Arsen Voskanyan is the top news of Colombia. Almost all the local TV channels start the daily news by reportage on the process of searching him, introduce details and try to find out how it happened that a taxi driver in Moscow was taken hostage by Colombian rebels.

It is mentioned that Arsen Voskanyan left for Colombia with a Russian passport and immediately headed to the jungles, where many are afraid to go since there are many poisonous snakes and wild animals there. There are almost no roads in that areas and are very sparsely populated. These areas have been under rebel control for over 50 years. The Embassy staff of Russia to Colombia is also very surprised. They try to understand if Arsen Voskanyan was aware of the risks of such a trip.

Later it became known that Voskanyan caught poisonous frogs in the jungles. Probably he wanted to smuggle them to Europe where those frogs can be sold at very high prices. But as a result, the “hunter” of the poisonous frogs was himself caught in a trap. He was taken hostage by the guerrilla army of Colombia. “For half a year diplomats and the Red Cross were negotiating his release, but everything failed at the last point”, says the reporter of NTV.

There are some small villages nearby the place of the escape. Colombian authorities have asked the residents to help in searching works. The police and the rebels are also searching him.
