Armenian government to seek fiscal consolidation, says finance minister

Armenian government to seek fiscal consolidation, says finance minister

YEREVAN, MARCH 30, ARMENPRESS. The Government will go for tax-budgetary consolidation, in order to be able to stabilize the debt in medium-term, finance minister Vardan Aramyan told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

“This implies that we must have a more conservative behavior during 2017-2018, and this means that some programs which we planned to realize must be delayed”, Aramyan said, adding that already today the government has 2 billion dollar signed loan obligations, which must be realized by 2021.

“When we divide this to years, it comprised yearly 350-400 million dollars, meaning by 2021 this much debt must be involved.  Stabilizing the debt is a priority issue for us. We must decrease the deficit gradually, then manage the decrease of deficit in the future in a way so we will be able to have such a deficit in line with the economic growth so that overgrowth of debt doesn’t occur. Inefficient management of debt also destroys the macroeconomic stability. And macroeconomic stability is a mandatory condition for us, in order to attract investments”, Aramyan said.
