Armenia’s cultural life to be full of musical festivals in 2017

YEREVAN, MARCH 21, ARMENPRESS. The cultural life of Armenia in 2017 will be full of numerous musical festivals. In May, the Im Sokhak (meaning My Nightingale) choir festival will be held for the first time in Gyumri, in June the Sayat Nova festival will be held in Yerevan and Tbilisi, in July the Tsovits Tsov Hayastan (meaning From Sea to Sea Armenia), which includes Artsakh, Javakhk and Western Armenia, in August a duduk festival will be held in Gyumri, in September the Sharakan spiritual musical festival in Tatev, and in October the Yerevan Duduk. The abovementioned project copyright is owned by Music of Armenia.

ARMENPRESS talked with founding director of Music of Armenia Hasmik Movsisian on the festivals and other issues.

“Music of Armenia was founded on October 17, 2008. During those years I was living in Great Britain, and by working is the musical area I was seeking to contribute to spreading Armenian music and raising awareness of Armenian performers”, Movsisian said.

According to her, Music of Armenia preserves and spreads the musical legacy of talented Armenian composers and performers globally.

“We plan and initiate numerous festivals and concert programs. We hold them both online and offline. We had a radio show in London, where we would touch upon Armenian music, with new subjects on every show. We don’t solely focus on Armenian folk songs, we also present songs of Armenians living both in Armenia and the Diaspora, ranging from rock, pop, jazz and others. We also involve performers who aren’t Armenians but play Armenian music and use Armenian instruments”, she said.

Music of Armenia holds 6 copyright festivals. Movsisian plans to depart for Istanbul, regarding organization of the Tsovits Tsov Hayastan festival, which will include Western Armenia, Artsakh and Javakhk. The Hrant Dink foundation is assisting the organizers of the event. They hope the Armenian culture ministry will join them.

Speaking about the Im Sokhak festival, Movsisian said she spoke with culture minister Armen Amiryan about a project, and during the conversation two other ideas came up. It was decided to hold the Im Sokhak chorus and international Duduk festivals in Gyumri in 2017.

The organization carries out marketing campaigns to raise interest for the festivals, which results in numerous tourists visiting the programs.
