Armenian President supports idea of setting hot line with Baku – interview

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 16, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan does not mind the idea of setting a hot line between Yerevan and Baku. Serzh Sargsyan announced in an interview with General Director of “Rossiya Segodnya” Dmitry Kiselyov that he supports the idea aimed at an operational response to the incidents on Nagorno Karabakh-Azerbaijan contact line. “It is possible, if it will be of any good, if we respond to the incidents in an operational manner. For instance, someone opens fire on the contact line, and according to our information, the Azerbaijani are firing, so I pick up the phone and call the president of Azerbaijan and say “someone is firing”. And he checks the situation”, “Armenpress” reports Sargsyan saying.

The Armenian President states that it will be possible to bring the idea into life on the basis of reciprocal commitments. “I would be ready to oversee and tell firmly if our soldiers are firing or no, of course, with the anticipation of receiving a similar attitude from the Azerbaijani leader”, President Sargsyan said, adding that in 1990s there was such an attempt to set a hot line.

We made such an attempt in early 1990s when I was the Defense Minister of Armenia. I had a direct connection with the Azerbaijani Defense Minister. In case of extreme cases we could contact each other, but now there is no such an opportunity”, Serzh Sargsyan said.
