YEREVAN, OCTOBER 27, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan met on October 27 with a number of representatives of the Syrian-Armenian community and Armenian organizations, benefactors involved in community issues and responsible state officials.

As “Armenpress” was informed from the press service of the Armenian President’s Office, the President of the Republic noted that he invited the present to discuss new ideas for supporting Syrian Armenians both in Armenia and Syria.

“Unfortunately, it is already a prolonged period that Syria and particularly Aleppo appear in the newsline of international news agencies due to the tragic events happening there. For us, I mean Armenians, Syria and Aleppo are not merely familiar names, like for many others, but a country where our compatriots live. And this is the reason why our Consulate General still operates in Aleppo, when the diplomatic representations of all the other countries abandoned Aleppo long before.

I can say without hesitation that our position was and remains the same: any Syrian-Armenian has the right to come to Armenia. Moreover, if he or she leaves Syria, it’s preferable that they arrive in Armenia. We are ready to do our best to create at least the minimal conditions so that these people integrate with our society with time and manage to solve their problems on their own”, the President said.

The Leader of the Berio Diocese of Catholicate of the Great House of Cilicia, His Eminence Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian and the other participants of the meeting shared with their concerns over the situation in Syria caused by the ongoing war, made proposals of helping the Syrian-Armenians with consolidated efforts and thanked for the consistent support to the Syrian-Armenian community by the Republic of Armenia, as well as Armenian organizations.
