German journalist finds cancellation of Armenian Genocide-dedicated concert in Istanbul shameful
deed

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 27, ARMENPRESS. German journalist Jürgen Gotschlich assesses the cancellation of the concert dedicated to the Armenian Genocide in Istanbul by the German Foreign Ministry as a shameful deed, “Armenpress” reports the journalist told Taz.de.

The journalist noted that after the adoption of the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide by the Bundestag, the German Federal Government had promised to do everything to foster dialogue between Armenia and Turkey.

One of those projects was the cancelled concert by the Dresden Symphony Orchestra called “Aghet” (tragedy) dedicated to the Armenian Genocide where German, Armenian and Turkish musicians would participate.  The important project was funded by the EU and the German MFA. It’s not accidental that it was the MFA that suggested the German Consulate in Istanbul as a place for performing the concert.

“But once again, like it was in 1915, when Germany was an ally for Turkey during the WWI, the German side sacrificed Armenians for more important benefits. At that time Germany did nothing to prevent the genocide, and today cancels the concert planned at the Consulate dedicated to that same genocide. This is a disgraceful act for a country that knows so much about the genocide and the Holocaust”, the journalist said.

Earlier, official representative of the German Foreign Ministry Martin Schaefer announced that the list of the guests invited to the concert has not been agreed with the ministry which is the reason the concert has been cancelled. He noted that the concert can take place later.

Turkey has announced about its exit from the European Union’s Creative Europe Program. According to reports, the pullout was in response to the concert in commemoration of the Armenian genocide. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has even announced about his support for the project.

This project offers the audience to abandon the world of hatred. I am convinced that only people who get acquainted to the dreams and traumas of others can foster the establishment of a bright future”, Frank-Walter Steinmeier had told.
