H.M.E.H. Fra Matthew Festing: “It is my duty to visit Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and pay 
homage to memory of victims”

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 24, ARMENRESS. Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta H.M.E.H. Fra Matthew Festing says it is his duty to visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial and pay homage to the memory of the innocent victims of the 1915-1922 tragic events.

At a press conference after the meeting with President Sargsyan, H.M.E.H. Fra Matthew Festing expressed hope that such tragedies will never happen again.

“There are very few nations in history, which have such ancient and such rich history as you. And it’s no coincidence, that you are known as the oldest Christian people. We cannot forget that tragedies happened in the history of Armenia. Today after midday, I consider my duty to visit the Memorial and pay tribute to the memory of the holy martyrs of the 1915-1922 tragic events”, H.M.E.H. Fra Matthew Festing said.

He said with pride that the Order of Malta has provided humanitarian aid to Armenia during the days of the 1988 devastating earthquake and still continues humanitarian activities in Armenia.

“We have humanitarian projects in your country. For instance, an orphanage in Etchmiatsin, a sanatorium in Dilijan, and we also take part in works in Yerevan. I think, this visit will give the chance to strengthen the historic ties which are present between the Military Order and Armenia. We hope that we can continue out cooperation, as well as the works which the Order carries out in Armenia”, the Prince added.

According to him, the Order of Malta is committed to help people in different crisis situations. “We are present in many locations. For instance, in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq our medical groups are assisting the refugees, who flee the war and pressures. Doctors provided first aid. We also help those refugees who arrive from various North-African countries. Our associations have multiplied assistance programs in Eastern Europe. Despite the emergency situations, which we withstand, we see that our volunteers are working in 120 countries, where they help the poor and those who were left out of the society’s margin. We focus on ensuring peace and security, eradication of poverty and strengthening human dignity. The Order of Malta carries out humanitarian assistance in the whole world, and our diplomatic work also greatly contribute to this. We have ties with more than 120 countries, numerous international organizations, we have a status of observer in the UN”, the Grand Master said.

Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta H.M.E.H. Fra Matthew Festing expressed confidence that the visit will allow to build bilateral, already existing excellent relations. He thanked President Sargsyan for the warm hospitality, underscoring that he enjoys his visit to Armenia.
