YEREVAN, OCTOBER 24, ARMENPRESS. The City Hall of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo – at the request of the local residents - has named one of the central squares of Peñarol district after Martin Terian – who was an Armenian Genocide survivor, Araks Radio told ARMENPRESS.

Martin Terian was born in 1913 in Marash. He passed away in 2006 in Montevideo. He survived the Armenian Genocide and settled in Uruguay, and established a shop in Montevideo’s Peñarol district, which operated for 40 years.

Mr. Terian and his spouse have always helped the poor children of the district.

During the opening ceremony of the square, residents of Peñarol mentioned they cannot forget the support of the Terians, and by naming the square after Martin Terian, they will keep his memory alive.

Mr. Terian received Armenian citizenship in the 90s. A movie on the Armenian Genocide was shot based on his eyewitness accounts.
