Number of traffic accidents decreases in Armenia – official Police data

YEREVAN, AUGUST 30, ARMENPRESS. Police Colonel Norik Sargsyan – Head of the Traffic Department of the Police, told reporters on August 30 the number of traffic accidents and the resulting victims has significantly decreased during 2016 in Armenia.

“As of today we have a stable traffic condition. The condition can be evaluated as satisfactory, since in the conditions of the growing numbers of the last five years, the picture has actually changed. As of today, 1972 traffic accidents occurred in Armenia from the beginning of the year, as a result 150 died, 2794 were injured. Comparing to the same period of last year, the number of accidents decreased by 174, and the number of deaths by 53, injured – by 253. These are the main indicators based on which we can make assessments. Since 2011, every year we documented growth, and this is the first time this growth has stopped”, Sargsyan said.

According to him, this achievement is linked to three factors. First of all, a stricter penalty for driving under the influence has been introduced. Second, the Police have been actively tackling drivers who drive with illegally tinted windshields.

The third factor is monitoring and supervising the maintenance of speed limits.
