Pope Francis meets with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

YEREVAN, AUGUST 29, ARMENPRESS. Pope Francis met with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan on Monday, learning details on the social network's plans to provide internet access to the rest of the world, “Armenpress” reports, citing USA Today.

In a statement released Monday, Greg Burke, the director of The Vatican's press office, says the pope and Zuckerberg discussed "how to use communications technology to alleviate poverty, encourage a culture of encounter, and to communicate a message of hope, especially to the most disadvantaged."

Zuckerberg also shared details of his visit with the pope in a post on Facebook.

"We told him how much we admire his message of mercy and tenderness, and how he's found new ways to communicate with people of every faith around the world," wrote Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg says he presented Pope Francis with a model of Aquila, an unmanned solar-powered aircraft the company will use to beam down broadband internet access to remote parts of the world. Aquila completed its first test flight in July.

The vehicle, which boasts the wingspan of a Boeing 737, can fly at low altitudes for up to 96 minutes, with an eventual goal of remaining in the air long enough to provide 24-hour access to the web.
