Turkish armed forces’ presence in Syria doesn’t solve in-depth issues – Orientalist S. Grigoryan

YEREVAN, AUGUST 25, ARMENPRESS. Orientalist Sargis Grigoryan says the Turkish armed forces’ presence in Syria is a long-planned operation, reports “Armenpress”.

He said at this stage the Turkish armed forces’ presence in Syria does not solve in-depth problems.

“I think this was not a coincidence, it has long been planned. The normalization of relations with Russia and certain developments inside Syria led to the start of this military operation. Of course, at this stage the Turkish armed forces’ presence does not solve in-depth issues since first of all, the number is not so huge. Despite announcing that the terrorist structures must be destroyed in the Turkish border, I think, at this stage they are solving this issue through such operations and support of local forces. The power equality which existed in the Turkish-Syrian border, was not beneficial for Ankara, it was related to both Kurds’ activities, and the IS. Turkey, in fact, went to solve that issue through such measures”, Grigoryan said.

I don’t see IS-Turkey link, moreover, I would say this link didn’t exist since the end of 2013. But some specialists insist there are other groups except IS, and Turkey assists them.

He said a military assistance from abroad is needed to change the situation in Syria, and this was a blow to official Damascus. “For a long time the Syrian leadership is unable to control certain territories, and now one more territory was added which will obviously be under the Turkish influence”, he said.

Sargis Grigoryan said Turkey’s such behavior is directed towards the reduction of the Kurdish activities in the region in order the Kurds to be unable to move towards the West.
