Doctors demand gunmen to release captive paramedics

YEREVAN, JULY 28, ARMENPRESS. Doctors of various hospitals of Armenia are demanding the gunmen who have seized the police precinct in Yerevan to release the paramedics who are held hostage.

During a discussion on July 28, colleagues of the hostages expressed concern over the situation.

“It is very unfortunate that our colleagues are held hostage. I urge the gunmen to allow the doctors to leave the area, because regardless of anything, doctors were faithful to their calling and assisted everyone. I think we have proved this with our work during these days”, doctor of the “103” emergency service Hasmik Hayrapetyan said.

Senior doctor Marina Alikhanova of the “103” emergency service said she has worked with hostage Malina Margaryan for many years and she is very sorry for her.

“Malina Margaryan has saved multiple lives. I ask the gunmen to release them all. It is very unfortunate that a woman is held in captivity for already two days”, she said.

Head of the women’s division of Polyclinic # 17 Shushanik Grigoryan said their captive colleagues knew where they were heading, however it didn’t stop them.

“The doctor’s profession obliges to help people without hesitation. I am asking the gunmen, display a humane approach and release the hostages”, Grigoryan said.

Earlier it was reported that two people are wounded in the police precinct. Law enforcement agencies urged the gunmen to let paramedics assist them, but were refused. Relatives of the gunmen also urged to hospitalize the wounded gunmen.

Later the gunmen demanded a doctor, stating the condition of the wounded people is serious, and later held the paramedics hostage after their arrival.

Among the medical personnel were – Norayr Tevanyan, Salvador Khechoyan, Davit Tonoyan and Malina Margaryan. Later Davit Tonoyan was freed.

Law enforcement agencies are taking measures to release the hostages via negotiations.

Paramedics have suggested to hospitalize the wounded gunmen, however were refused.

The gunmen demanded Healthcare Minister to arrive at the scene and organize surgery at the precinct.
