YEREVAN BESTSELLER 4/19. Foenkinos’ “Charlotte” is in the list

YEREVAN, JULY 1, ARMENPRESS. This week’s ranking of ARMENPRESS news agency’s YEREVAN BESTSELLER project is led by "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez which was translated from Russia by Ruben Hovespyan. It is one of the most famous works by Márquez which was published by “Bookinist” publishing.

“Manuscript Found in Accra” by Paulo Coelho comes next where the author puts an emphasis on the propaganda of the eternal values and the beautiful interpretation with the wish to see all these maintained in the human being.

“Nausea” by Jean-Paul Sartre is ranked the 3rd in the list. It is a philosophical novel by the existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, published in 1938. It is Sartre's first novel and, in his opinion, one of his best works.

The novel takes place in 'Bouville' (literally, 'Mud town') a town similar to Le Havre, and it concerns a dejected historian, who becomes convinced that inanimate objects and situations encroach on his ability to define himself, on his intellectual and spiritual freedom, evoking in the protagonist a sense of nausea.

"Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez is 4th in this week’s list. “People are not always born the day their mothers bring them to the world: Life forces them to be reborn many times”, this is the philosophy of the novel. It was translated to Armenian by Frunzik Kirakosyan.

Mark Aren’s “Where wild roses bloom” comes next. This is the second novel of the author which describes the inner world of an Armenophobic Turkish former serviceman, when he, already an old man, suddenly hears a lullaby song that reminds him of his mother and later finds out that the song is in Armenian: realizing his parents were Armenians. The same former serviceman spends his remaining life searching the graves of his parents, without knowing that it was a misunderstanding.

English writer Oscar Wilde’s novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, which is considered one of his most significant works, is ranked 6th in the list. It is one of the most read books in the world. The plot of the novel focuses on the main character selling his soul to the devil, and in return getting eternal youth, beauty and power.

“Captain Pantoja and the Special Service” is a relatively short comedic novel by acclaimed Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, which is ranked 7th this week.

According to the author himself, the work is based on facts, as he was able to verify them in 1958 and in 1962 when he travelled to the Peruvian jungle.

“The Art of Dedication or Dithyramb to a Rose” written by Edgar Harutyunyan comes next.

“Charlotte” by David Foenkinos ranked the 9th this week. Young German painter was killed at 26, she was pregnant. The novel was translated from French by Nvard Vardanyan. The book has been published by “Antares” publishing house.

Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” is in 10th position in the list.

Kundera's most famous work, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, was published in 1984. The book chronicles the fragile nature of an individual's fate, theorizing that a single lifetime is insignificant in the scope of Nietzsche's concept of eternal return. In an infinite universe, everything is guaranteed to recur infinitely. In 1988, American director Philip Kaufman released a film adaptation.

To complete the bestseller list, the following bookshops have participated in the survey: “New Book” (093-60-40-64), “Noah’s Ark” (56-81-84), “Armenian Book” (54-07-06), “Narek” (51-91-36), “Bookinist” (53-74-13), “Antares” (091-90-01-23), “Zangak” (23-26-49).
