Armenian-French archeological expedition excavates oldest street of Yerevan

YEREVAN, JUNE 23, ARMENPRESS. For 8 years the Armenian-French archeological expedition conducts excavations in the Erebuni Fortress near Khaldi temple during which they revealed the oldest street of Yerevan.

In an interview with “Armenpress”, expedition leader of the Armenian side, Erebuni museum researcher Mikayel Badalyan said the excavations aim to collect information about Urartu/post-Urartu transition period.

“It is already 9 days we have started the works, we are cleaning the street. Our French partners must work in that part in order to have a better understanding of the earthquake and the overall picture. We have not excavated such a street in other Urartu monuments. If we consider Erebuni as a cradle of Yerevan, so we deal with the oldest street of the old Yerevan”, he said.

“It is a very important stage for our history and archeology. During the last two years we have opened Urartu street. The important thing is that traces of earthquake were fixed which date back to the first half of the 7th century BC. The earthquake is likely to give us an explanation why Teishebaini (Red Hill) city was built since we know that many things were taken to the Red Hill from Erebuni, and maybe this earthquake was the reason of that”, Badalyan said.

He informed that this year’s works are still in an initial stage, after several days more precise data will be provided.
