Yerevan Bestseller 4/9: “Journey of Idiots” by Hrachya Saribekyan in the list

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. This week’s ranking of “Armenpress” Yerevan Bestseller project is led by "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez. “People are not always born the day their mothers bring them to the world: Life forces them to be reborn many times”, this is the philosophy of the novel. It was translated to Armenian by Frunzik Kirakosyan.

Mark Aren’s “Where wild roses bloom” novel is 2nd in the list. This is the second novel of the author which describes the inner world of an Armenophobic Turkish former serviceman, when he, already an old man, suddenly hears a lullaby song that reminds him of his mother and later finds out that the song is in Armenian: realizing his parents were Armenians. The same former serviceman spends his remaining life searching the graves of his parents, without knowing that it was a misunderstanding.

“The Autumn of the Patriarch” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is 3rd.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez is 4th. The novel was translated from Russian to Armenian by Ruben Hovsepyan and the “Bookinist” publishing house presented the new edition.

Many questions of the Armenian reality of the 90s are still unanswered. And to answer some of those questions would be better off with silence. Hrachya Saribekyan’s “Journey of Idiots” brings up some of those “silenced” topics. For example, what happened to the Armenian patients of the psychiatric clinics of Baku and other Azeri cities? Thus, the journey of the novel’s characters is a unique trip for the readers as well.

“1984" by George Orwell is 6th in the list. The book is up to this day considered a banned book in many countries.

“Thus spoke Zarathustra” by Friedrich Nietzsche is 7th. It is a novel which summons up the German philosopher’s basic views by poetic inspirations. It was published in Armenian in 2002.

Ray Bradbury’s “Martian Chronicles” is 8th. It is considered as one of the best books of the 20th century. As Astronomer Carl Sagan once noticed, “Mars is a kind of mythical arena, where our earthly hopes and fears are incarnated.”

Edgar Harutyunyan’s “Art of Devotion or Ode to Rose” is ranked 9th.

William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” is 10th. The novel is regarded as one of the best works of the author.

To complete the bestseller list, the following bookshops have participated in the survey: “New Book” (093-60-40-64), “Noah’s Ark” (56-81-84), “Armenian Book” (54-07-06), “Narek” (51-91-36), “Bookinist” (53-74-13), “Antares” (091-90-01-23), “Zangak” (23-26-49).
