Yerevan bestseller 4/5: “Fahrenheit 451” in the list

YEREVAN, MARCH 25, ARMENPRESS. This week’s ranking of the "Armenpress" news agency’s "Yerevan bestseller" project is led by Mark Aren's "Where the Wild Roses Bloom”. This is the second novel of the author which describes the inner world of an Armenophobic Turkish former serviceman, when he, already an old man, suddenly hears a lullaby song that reminds him of his mother and later finds out that the song is in Armenian: realizing his parents were Armenians. The same former serviceman spends his remaining life searching the graves of his parents, without knowing that it was a misunderstanding.

“The Art of Dedication or Dithyramb to a Rose” written by Edgar Harutyunyan occupies the second position in the list.

García Márquez’s “Memories of My Melancholy Whores” is the third. The book was translated into Armenian from the Russian version by Hovhannes Ayvazyan in 2010. "Memories of My Melancholy Whores" is dedicated to the love affairs of an old journalist, who falls in love with a young girl.

"Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury occupies the fourth place. Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel published in 1953. It is regarded as one of his best works. The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. The title refers to the temperature that Bradbury understood to be the autoignition point of paper.

“Autumn of the Patriarch” by García Márquez occupies the 5th place. One of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's most intricate and ambitious works, The Autumn of the Patriarch is a brilliant tale of a Caribbean tyrant and the corruption of power.

English writer Oscar Wilde’s novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, which is considered one of his most significant works, is ranked 6th. It is one of the most read books in the world. The plot of the novel is in line with the content of those books, where the main character sells his soul to the devil, and in return gets eternal youth, beauty and power.

“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green comes next on our list. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” is in the 8th position in the list.

Kundera's most famous work, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, was published in 1984. The book chronicles the fragile nature of an individual's fate, theorizing that a single lifetime is insignificant in the scope of Nietzsche's concept of eternal return. In an infinite universe, everything is guaranteed to recur infinitely. In 1988, American director Philip Kaufman released a film adaptation.

American well-known writer Ray Bradbury’s “Martian Chronicles” ranks the 9th. It is considered as one of the best books of the 20th century. As Astronomer Carl Sagan once noticed, “Mars is a kind of mythical arena, where our earthly hopes and fears are incarnated.”

"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Columbian author Gabriel García Márquez occupies the last position. The novel was translated from Russian into Armenian and the “Bookinist” publishing house presented its new edition.

To complete the bestseller list, the following bookshops have participated in the survey: “New Book” (093-60-40-64), “Noah’s Ark” (56-81-84), “Armenian Book” (54-07-06), “Narek” (51-91-36), “Bookinist” (53-74-13), “Antares” (091-90-01-23) and “Zangak” (23-25-28).
