Armenian National Committee of Australia to pay special attention to Artsakh recognition

Armenian National Committee of Australia to pay special attention to Artsakh recognition

YEREVAN, MARCH 9, ARMENPRESS.  The Armenian National Committee of Australia aims to expand the circle of its supporters in Australia’s States, so as they also recognize the Armenian Genocide, Executive Administrator of ANC of Australia Arin Markarian told “Armenpress”.

-Mr. Markarian, Trent Zimmerman replaces Joe Hockey in Australia’s House of Representatives, who has already called on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. What are the expectations of the Armenian National Committee of Australia from the new MP?

-First of all I want to mention that Joe Hockey’s work was excellent for the Armenian community. Since he entered the parliament, we established firm ties with him, and had very good relations. Members of the Armenian National Committee have already met with Trent Zimmerman. During the meeting he stated that he will keep constant contact with the Armenian community, will be responsive towards issues of concern of Armenians, and will always focus on those issues, and in case of necessity, will raise those issues at the Australian parliament. We witnessed the sincerity of Trent Zimmerman recently. He urged to recognize the Armenian Genocide at Australia’s House of Representatives. Trent Zimmerman was elected MP in December, and up till now we are satisfied with his activities. We want him to continue Joe Hockey’s work, particularly, in regard of the Armenian Genocide. Also, Trent Zimmerman's rise to politics can be linked to what he learnt from Joe Hockey as a result of a close working relationship.

-What are the directions the Armenian National Committee of Australia plans to work in 2016? Which issues will be mostly emphasized?

-Last year we announced the new composition of the Committee. Specialists of various spheres are involved, such as international relations, politics, law, trade, economy and so on. Our entire team will work for the sake of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. It should be stated for our people that it is necessary to go on with the works after the 100th anniversary as long as we reach our goals. No matter how long has passed, 100 years, 110 or more, the aim is one and the same, justice. I want to remind that South Australia and New South Wales States have recognized the Armenian Genocide. We aim to expand the circle of our supporters in Australia’s States, so as they also recognize the Armenian Genocide.

-What have you planned for Artsakh recognition process? Years ago the parliamentary delegation of New South Wales State visited Armenia and Artsakh. Are similar visits planned for this year?

-This year we will pay a special attention to issues related with Artsakh Recognition. It is notable that local journalists are starting to show interest towards Artsakh. Artsakh issue was the topic of the House of Representatives and the Senate as well. The opinions are different; there are both pro-Armenian and anti-Armenian ones. John Alexander from the House of Representatives has a positive stance on Artsakh issue, the same can be told about Joe Bullock. Of course, there are also MPs whose positions are not pro-Armenian, for example, Luke Simpkins from Western Australia, who gives more privilege to Azerbaijan.

In the current year we plan meetings and exhibitions on Artsakh topic in order to fully inform the government about Artsakh.  Unfortunately, Joe Bullock has announced about his plans to leave politics, but we will continue working with the senators, to expand the number of MPs with pro-Armenian stance.

-How would you assess the reaction of Azerbaijan and Turkey?

-Rather active. That reaction gains power with time, huge resources are spent. But we are always ready to be on the front line, we do no lesser active work. We follow the social networks and media to make sure that the truth about Artsakh and the Armenian Genocide is presented.
