Kemal Yalçin: My world was very poor before recognizing Armenians

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 13, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia Hranush Hakobyan received on October 13 Kemal Yalçin, Turkish writer residing in Germany, and Vladimir Kocharyan theatrical group of New York. As “Armenpress” was informed by the Department of Media and Public Relations of the Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia, Minister Hakobyan welcomed the guests, saying:

“I am glad to meet the respectful writer and Vladimir Kocharyan theatrical group. I am also glad that by the efforts of Karine Kocharyan, the work of Kemal Yalçin “You Rejoice My Heart” was theatricalized. I am familiar with the book and want to highlight that it’s important when foreigners write about a topic so painful for us. The approach of Turkish intellectuals on the issue is highly commendable. In this respect Mr. Yalçin proves that the truth is more important for him than nationality. ”

Kemal Yalçin expressed his deepest condolences on the atrocities committed by his compatriots 100 years ago.

“It’s an honor for me to be in Armenia. My world was very poor before recognizing the Armenians. For years people have kept silent in Turkey and I learnt the whole truth when studying in Germany. I have had a feeling of guilt since then.  As a Turkish journalist I apologize to the Armenians for the genocide.  My candid wish is the recovery of the bridge uniting the borders of Armenia and Turkey. I believe that the day will come when we will meet near the bridge and raise glasses to friendship as actually the Armenians and Turks had lived side by side for centuries.  The Armenians are creative people and have a big contribution not only in the treasury of Turkey but also that of world’s civilization. Indeed, the Turks must say words of gratitude to the Armenian people,” Yalçin said.
