Vahan Babayan draws PACE attention on Azerbaijani-led ceasefire violation cases

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 28, ARMENPRESS. Member of the Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Vahan Babayan, gave a speech during the session of the Assembly, where he referred to the provocative measures by the Azerbaijani side to incite tension on Armenia-Azerbaijan border and Karabakh-Azerbaijan contact line.

The deputy emphasized that Azerbaijan, neglecting the calls by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs, has increased the cases of ceasefire violation in the recent period not only on Karabakh-Azerbaijan contact line but also in the direction of bordering communities and military positions of Tavush, applying large caliber weapons as well. He mentioned that as a result of provocative measures by Azerbaijan, three civilians in Tavush Province and 4 young soldiers in Nagorno Karabakh, deployed 5 kms away from the front line, were killed.

“With such provocative measures Baku demonstrates that it neglects the commitments assumed by itself. This is another failed attempt to deviate the attention of the international society from the gross human rights violations in that country”, “Armenpress” reports that the deputy said. Vahan Babayan added that Azerbaijan’s behavior is the result of the inadequate response by the international society granting Azerbaijan freedom in its actions which leads to human losses.

“Azerbaijan continuously denies all the proposals and initiatives to create mechanism for trust aimed at stabilizing the situation between the sides”, noted Vahab Babayan. He reminded that the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs announced that Armenia has already embraced the proposal to invest a mechanism of investigating ceasefire violation cases, but it is still being discussed with Azerbaijan.

The deputy called the Assembly members to pay attention to Azerbaijan’s behavior as it is Azerbaijan that regularly violates the ceasefire regime and it is Azerbaijan that is responsible for the further developments. Concluding his speech, Vahan Babayan added that the Armenian army is fully capable to protect the borders of the motherland which it has proved many times.
