Armenia PM: Purchasing gas by Russian ruble will foster development of Armenia’s economy

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 16, ARMENPRESS. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Hovik Abrahamyan, clarified his proposal to conduct the trade of strategic products among the EAEU member states by ruble. In an interview with journalists at the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan mentioned that his proposal referred to energy. “My proposal referred particularly to energy so that, for instance we, purchase gas by ruble. We have already agreed that the EAEU member states will discuss that issue. It cannot be solved very rapidly, but it is important that we have included the issue in the agenda”, “Armenpress” reports, the PM emphasized.

To the question what caused raising such a question, the PM clarified that exchange rate fluctuations cause some problems, therefore, it will be correct for Armenia to pay in RF ruble for purchasing gas. “I think that it is a positive proposal and will have a positive impact on the economy of our country”, emphasized the Prime Minister.

To the remark that he mentioned option may not be beneficial for the RF, Hovik Abrahamyan answered that Armenia and Russia are strategic partners and paying the RF in ruble for purchasing gas will benefit Armenia’s economy.

He underlined that there is no response from the Russian side yet, clarifying that there has been just a proposal to include the issue in the agenda of the working group for discussion.

On September 8, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, giving a speech in Grodno at the session of Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, had mentioned in his speech that the Armenian side backs the adoption of the documents included and agreed upon in the session.  The Prime Minister said that Armenia attaches great importance to the measures undertaken to expand industrial cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union. Hovik Abrahamyan also backed the agreements reached earlier, particularly the idea of de-dolarization.
