Pope Francis to celebrate liturgy on Armenian Genocide centenary

YEREVAN, JANUARY 29, ARMENPRESS. Pope Francis will celebrate a special liturgy in April on Armenian Genocide centenary, the Vatican announced. As reports “Armenpress”, Catholic News Herald stated about this. The Mass for Armenian-rite faithful will be offered in St. Peter's Basilica on April 12.

Previously it was reported that the leader of the world's Roman Catholics Pope Francis has stated that he wants to make a visit to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

Pope Francis urged Turkey to unconditionally recognize the Armenian Genocide seven years ago. As reports Armenpress, referring to Asbarez, during events marking the 91st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Buenos Aires, then Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio urged Turkey to recognize the Genocide as the “gravest crime of Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian people and the entire humanity.”

The fact of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman government has been documented, recognized, and affirmed in the form of media and eyewitness reports, laws, resolutions, and statements by many states and international organizations. The complete catalogue of all documents categorizing the 1915 wholesale massacre of the Armenian population in Ottoman Empire as a premeditated and thoroughly executed act of genocide, is extensive. Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965. The massacres of the Armenian people were officially condemned and recognized as genocide in accordance with the international law by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Canada, Vatican and Australia.
