Jivan Avetisyan reveals why Azerbaijan cannot shoot real films about Karabakh

YEREVAN, MAY 30, ARMENPRESS. Director Jivan Avetisyan considers his visit to 67th Cannes Film Market extremely productive. During his visit the Armenian director presented the joint Armenian-Lithuanian film “Tevanik” on Karabakh war, as well as his new "The Last Resident" film project. About the latter Jivan talked at both the Armenian and Russian pavilions of the film market, causing another Azeri hysteria. “The Last Resident” film tells about Nagorno Karabakh. The events take place in 1988-1989.

“The National Cinema Centre of Armenia gave me an opportunity to introduce my new story at the Armenian pavilion of the Cannes Film Market. Also, the Russian side as well allowed us to introduce the project in their pavilion for several minutes. Each year they choose several projects, the authors of which are allowed to introduce them in their pavilion for several minutes. “The Last Resident” was among those projects this year. As a rule, a film that can be presented at the Russian pavilion should have a Russian co-producer, and though I had none, they liked the story and decided to allow its presentation as an exception” – stated director Jivan Avetisyan, in his conversation with “Armenpress” correspondent.

Jivan Avetisyan is certain that Azerbaijan cannot shoot a real film about Karabakh. "You cannot shoot a film about Artsakh for three reasons. Firstly, if you illustrate the army escaping from Shushi to Baku, hardly would anyone watch the film. Secondly, the making of a film is not only about the money. First and foremost, you need to have an idea. Thirdly, adequate Azeris, as positive heroes, can be found in my films as well, for example - Fatima Khatun. And if you have a positive Armenian hero in your films, you will find yourselves in jail, instead of Cannes” – stated Avetisyan.
