Armenian President receives IAEA Director General

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 5, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan received Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, the Presidential Office said.

In his remarks the President highlighted the importance of the cooperation between the Armenian government and the IAEA, which, he said, is very important for ensuring the energy and nuclear security of Armenia.

“Your visit is very important for us. The nuclear power plant in Armenia has started its operation in 1976. From that period up to now we have passed through many experiments. Later it resumed its works in 1995. I participated in that process as a member of the management commission and can state for sure that the re-launch of the NPP cannot have taken place without our close cooperation with IAEA, without the broad consulting and technical support provided by the agency. I hope our cooperation will be continuous”, he said.

Rafael Grossi thanked for the reception and said that IAEA is ready to support Armenia in developing security, digital systems and strategy.

The meeting also touched upon the designing works for building a new nuclear energy unit in Armenia, as well as the necessity of training young and professional specialists. The IAEA Director General said that Armenia can always expect the Agency’s support.

During the meeting the sides agreed to continue the close cooperation particularly in expert consulting and comprehensive support framework.
