Ex-President Kocharyan says CSTO membership not obstacle for Armenia to purchase weapons from West

Ex-President Kocharyan says CSTO membership not obstacle for Armenia to purchase weapons
from West

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 28, ARMENPRESS. 2nd President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan says that Armenia’s membership to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is not an obstacle for purchasing weapons from the West.

“We were a member of the CSTO, but we were also buying weapons from Europe. We have bought our first batch of weapons from Europe back in 1991 when the Soviet Union had not collapsed yet. Even that time. It was quite a large batch. I will not disclose from which country, how and through which country we have acquired it. There were all opportunities. We were purchasing both from China, Europe and Russia. And I don’t think that being a member of the CSTO is an obstacle here”, he said during a press conference in response to the question of ARMENPRESS.

He added that they even received a little bit expensive, but quite good quality communication equipment from the United States. “And that time we were just making the inquiries, and they approved our wish”, the ex-President said.

On September 27 the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) reported that the United States policymakers are considering the sale of U.S. armaments to Armenia. “For the first time since the rebirth of Armenian independence in 1991, U.S. policymakers - under sustained bipartisan pressure from Congress - are considering the sale of U.S. armaments to help Armenia defend itself against relentless (Turkey-backed) Azerbaijani aggression and ethnic-cleansing,” the ANCA said in a statement.
