Azerbaijan tries to solve domestic problem with operations on Armenia border – political scientist

Azerbaijan tries to solve domestic problem with operations on Armenia border – political
scientist

YEREVAN, JULY 13, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijan’s operations in the direction of the Armenia border are not of such a nature that we can expect serious developments, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan told Armenpress, commenting on the July 12 provocative operations launched by Azerbaijan in the direction of the Armenian positions.

“The success of such operations is usually seen within several hours. We saw that it wasn’t possible to surprise the Armenian Armed Forces. This speaks about the preparedness of the Armenian Armed Forces”, the political scientist said.

He added that at this stage Azerbaijan with such actions is trying to solve a domestic, a local problem. According to Iskandaryan, it’s very difficult to analyze the domestic developments in Azerbaijan because there are absolutely other approaches towards media there, there are factual restrictions.

“In fact, it’s very difficult to understand what is taking place, but with the information we have we can state that serious developments are taking place in the Azerbaijani political elite connected with both the foreign affairs and the defense ministers. In addition, Azerbaijan is now in a very serious economic and epidemiological situation. There is also a social dissatisfaction”, he said, adding: “I don’t think that Azerbaijan’s operations have a direct link with the militaristic statements made at various levels in the past one, two months. These statements have always been made, and we witnessed them also in the past months. What has happened on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, perhaps is an attempt [by Azerbaijani side] to solve a domestic problem. I repeat once again, I don’t think these operations have a developing nature”, he added.

At about 12:30, July 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan attempted to violate the state border of Armenia in an UAZ vehicle in the direction of Tavush province. Following the warning of the Armenian side, the Azerbaijani armed forces left the vehicle and returned to their position. At about 13:45, the Azerbaijani forces made a second attempt to capture the Armenian border post, using artillery fire, but were pushed back, suffering losses.

No casualties were reported from the Armenian side.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry reported that three soldiers have died, four others were wounded in the incident.

Later that day Armenian defense minister’s spokesperson Shushan Stepanyan announced that the Azerbaijani side restarted shelling the same Armenian position, using 82 mm mortars and a tank.

Today Shushan Stepanyan announced that the Azerbaijani side has again resumed shelling the Armenian positions.
