Armenia’s SCPEC observes aviation fuel market with Georgian side

Armenpress 10:36, 20 March, 2019

YEREVAN, MARCH 20, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) has started observations in the aviation fuel market aimed at revealing all possible competition problems in the aviation fuel circulation field, the SCPEC told Armenpress.

The observation is specifically important because the prices of aviation fuel greatly impact the price increase of air tickets.

The SCPEC informs that currently the import of aviation fuel for the civil aviation is being carried out only by the Zvartnots International Airport of Yerevan, there are no other importers. The observations revealed that the absence of competition in the aviation fuel circulation field is connected with that fuel transportation problems in Georgia. In particular, the transportation of aviation fuel via Georgia is being carried out through the Georgian railroad which cooperates with a limited number of companies in a discretionary approach. As a result, all those companies, which want to import aviation fuel, have no opportunity to carry out supplies for the Armenian market because there is no other economically efficient alternative to the Georgian railroad.

Given the aforementioned, Armenia’s SCPEC has applied to the Georgian Competition Authority to jointly observe these problems and take practical steps for solving them.
