Archbishop Nourhan Manoogian elected Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem

YEREVAN, JANUARY 24, ARMENPRESS. The Grand Sacristan of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem Archbishop Nourhan Manoogian has been elected the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem. "Armenpress" reporter in Jerusalem, member of St. James Convent Archimandrite Koryun Baghdasaryan reported that Archbishop Nourhan Manoogian received 17 votes. And his opponent Acting Patriarch Archbishop Aris Shirvanian received 15 votes.

The patriarchal elections were held in two rounds. The first stage of the patriarchal elections launched in the hall of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem on January 23. Solely celibate members of the convent can partake in the patriarchal elections. The patriarchal election will be held in two stages. Five candidates will be chosen in the first stage of the elections by secret polling. In accordance with the Statute of the Jerusalem Convent (1882) 35 year old archimandrites and bishops can become patriarchal candidates. On January 25 an assembly dedicated to the issue of legislative reforms will be convoked in the patriarchate.

The patriarchal throne remained vacant since the after long illness at the age of 93 Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem Rev. Archbishop Torkom Manoukyan passed away.
