Armenia and Azerbaijan to strictly maintain ceasefire regime: Herman Van Rompuy

YEREVAN, JULY 4, ARMENPRESS: Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement should remain priority. President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy came forth at the course of the briefing with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Armenpress reports.

“Every passing day is a lost opportunity for all of us. We must build trust and respect for the regulation of the issue. We were concerned over the news on the number of armed incidents registered in the contact line between Armenia and Azerbaijan. I deeply regret for the human losses and express condolences to the bereaved families” President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy noted.

In the words of the top diplomat NKR conflict must not be regulated by military intervention. “Only the solution through peaceful and negation process can provide a secure and prospective future. The settlement of the issue and maintenance of safe environment will be profitable for the entire nation" Herman van Rompuy stressed.

EU President stated Armenia and Azerbaijan should make decision on the peaceful and lasting regulation of the issue based on the Madrid principles.

“Armenia and Azerbaijan should fully implement their commitments undertaken within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. The sides should also strictly maintain the cease fire regime, practice restraint and refrain from military rhetoric.EU is ready to support any confidence building measure, "said van Rompuy.

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy is in South Caucasus region on official visit on July 3-5. The visit started in Armenia on July 3-4 and will be continued in Georgia and Azerbaijan.
