Perinçek’s case hearing launched at ECHR

STRASBURG, JANUARY 28, ARMENPRESS: The European Court of Human Rights is holding a Grand Chamber hearing on the case of Doğu Perinçek. The Chief Advisor to the Prosecutor General of Armenia Kristine Melkonyan told Armenpress that at the session Doğu Perinçek was the first to deliver speech. According to the procedure, then speeches will be delivered by the delegations of Switzerland, Armenia and Turkey.

The Armenian side will be represented by the Prosecutor General of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan, the renowned attorneys Amal Clooney and Geoffrey Robertson.
Earlier it was reported that the Armenian delegation is already in Strasburg. The preparatory works have been completed and the group of Armenian and foreign lawyers is getting ready for the trial on Doğu Perinçek’s case, which raised quite an interest in Armenia and Diaspora. The hearing was take place today, on January 28 at 12:15 Yerevan time.
The European Court of Human Rights will be holding a Grand Chamber hearing in the case of Perinçek on 28 January 2015. Armenia applied to be included as a third party in the case back in August 2014.
Internationally renowned attorney Amal Clooney, the wife of famous actor George Clooney, will defend Armenia’s interest at the European court. All six attorneys, who will be representing Armenia, are expected to address the ECHR.
On March 9 2007, the Swiss court had convicted Doğu Perinçek for denying the Armenian Genocide. On December 17 2013, the ECHR had ruled in favor of Perinçek’s lawsuit that was filed against Switzerland. Subsequently, the Government of Switzerland had decided to petition that the Doğu Perinçek case be referred for a review by the ECHR Grand Chamber. Afterward, Armenia had petitioned to the ECHR, and it now acts as a third party in this case. Turkey as well has petitioned to take part in the trial.
