EU to provide 7 million Euros for upcoming electoral process in Armenia – EU Ambassador

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The EU will provide 7 million Euros to Armenia with the purpose of organizing the electoral process, Ambassador Piotr Switalski – head of the EU delegation to Armenia, announced during the Freedom of Speech and Press workshop on December 8 within the framework of the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) program.

“The amount planned by Germany and the United Kingdom is 90% of the foreign aid, which will be provided for the upcoming electoral process. This is unprecedented in the history of the EU. Such investments have never been done before in post-Soviet territories”, Ambassador Switalski said.

In his opinion, taking such risk and making such investment is worth it, since the EU believes the money will serve a good purpose. “I think the elections in Armenia will be on the highest level of European standards”, he said, expressing conviction that the next elections will have a decisive role in Armenia’s future economic and political development.

“Freedom of speech is especially very important for Armenia, because we are slowly approaching the national elections of 2017 and the best conditions must be created to provide freedom of speech and press independence. We hope the upcoming elections will be organized in the best way and will be in line with European standards”, the Ambassador said within the framework of the TAIEX program.
