Parliament’s Deputy Speaker identifies three steps for holding elections in compliance with
democratic standards

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. The funds provided by the international donor organizations aimed at properly organizing the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia must be spent purposefully, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov told reporters in the Parliament, reports “Armenpress”.

“Minister-Chief of the Government’s Staff Davit Harutyunyan also told about this during the discussions of the Electoral Code. And we assess positively the attitude of our international partners that the upcoming elections in Armenia must be in compliance with democratic standards”, he said.

Sharmazanov identified three steps necessary for holding elections in compliance with democratic standards. He said the first step is the political will of the authorities which exists. The second step concerns consolidation between the political forces which exists as well. “The third step is the availability of funds, and it seems this issue is being solved thanks to the assistance provided by our international partners”, Eduard Sharmazanov said.

To the question that the US Embassy’s last statement says that the agreement between the political forces is not enough for holding elections in compliance with democratic standards, the Deputy Speaker said: “I don’t know what statement the Embassy has issued, but I said that the first step relates to the political will of the authorities, the second one is the consolidation between the political forces. These two already exist, and the third one, the availability of funds, seems, is being solved”.
