Yerevan summit

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 14, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the Secretary-General of the CSTO Nikolay Bordyuzha met with media representatives after the CSTO Collective Security Council session to brief on the results of the Yerevan session, “Armenpress” was informed from the press service of the Armenian President’s Office.

Addressing to the reporters, Serzh Sargsyan informed that a number of key documents and decisions were adopted during today’s CSTO Collective Security Council session aimed at reinforcing the potential of the Organization and improvement of its functions.

“Among the key results of the session I would point out the adoption of the CSTO Collective Security Strategy. The works that lasted for over 5 years for the elaboration of the document are over”, President Sargsyan said, adding that CSTO’s Yerevan Strategy envisages  the priorities of the Organization until 2025 and reinforces all the guidelines  for the future development  in all the directions.

Serzh Sargsyan stated that the heads of the states once again reaffirmed the role of the Organization as a key tool for fostering peace and stability, and ensuring security and sovereignty of the member states.

“Our CSTO partners expressed support for the Vienna and St. Petersburg agreements on Nagorno Karabakh issue, aimed at preventing escalation in the conflict zone, stabilization of the situation and creation of favorable conditions for the continuation of the peace process. The necessity of exclusively peaceful settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict was reaffirmed at the session. The heads of states also expressed support to the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs in Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, based on the international law, UN charter, Helsinki Final Act, particularly in the framework of non-use of force or its threat, territorial integrity of states, and right to self-determination of nations” Sargsyan said.  

The Armenian President informed that many other key issues had been discussed at the session, pointing out the document signed for the fight of international terrorism. “The decision on the adjustment of a united list of the organizations recognized as terroristic is a key document”, he said.

Serzh Sargsyan informed that the issue of the appointment of a new secretary-general of the CSTO was withdrawn from the agenda of the session, which will be discussed at the end of the year in St. Petersburg. He added that Belarus has assumed the chairmanship of the Organization and sincerely wished success to the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in the implementation of the decisions taken at the Yerevan summit, expressing readiness to render comprehensive assistance.
