YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 30, ARMENPRESS.  President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received the rector of University of Oriental Republic of Uruguay Roberto Markarian on September 30.

Greeting the guest, the President of the republic mentioned that it is a great honor that one of the key educational institutions of friendly Uruguay is headed by our compatriot, who has made a significant contribution to the development of education in that country and enjoys great respect in Uruguay.

As “Armenpress” was informed from the press service of the Armenian President’s Office, the interlocutors exchanged ideas over developing Armenia-Uruguay cooperation in the sphere of education at the meeting. Referring to the expected signing of the cooperation agreement between Yerevan State University and the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay on October 3, the Armenian President and the rector of the University of Uruguay mutually highlighted the effective cooperation that is being established between Armenia and Uruguay in the sphere of education, hoping that it will further foster partnership between the educational systems of the two countries and exchange programs.

Touching upon the friendly relations between Armenia and Uruguay based on mutual respect, the interlocutors shared the idea that the role of the Armenian community in Uruguay is of key importance for deepening the relations between the two states and activation of cooperation in the spheres of mutual interest.

The President recalled with warmth his visit to Uruguay in July, 2014, the meetings with the top leadership of the country and the agreements reached in the sidelines of the visit.

Serzh Sargsyan stated that the Armenian people remember with gratitude and highly appreciate the fact that Uruguay was the first country to recognize the Armenian Genocide over 50 years ago, and is thankful to the leadership and people of Uruguay for commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on a state level.

Rector Roberto Markarian mentioned that he is curious about the methodology of chess courses delivered at Armenian public schools, and wishes to apply the Armenian experience at the schools of Uruguay for which he will meet with Armenian chess players tomorrow during a conference in Tsaghkadzor.

President Sargsyan and rector Markarian also exchanged ideas over issues of pan-Armenian importance.
