Geneva authorities permit to erect monument of Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, MAY 26, ARMENPRESS. Local authorities of Geneva allowed to erect “Lantern of Memory” monument dedicated to the memory of the Armenian Genocide in the Trembley park, “Armenpress” reports, Tribune de Geneve informs.

Although the idea of the monument was born a decade ago, the Armenian community received the permission to erect it last week.

Nevertheless, the fight is not over yet. Lawyer Yves Nidegger said he will fire an appeal against the authorization of erecting the monument since he received complaints from 14 citizens.

“The Trembley park is a green area. Thus, nothing can be constructed here, except from facilities of public interest that are directly related to the use of this area. This is not that case since the applicant is a private organization which pursues its own interests”, the lawyer said. He stated that 9 meters high lanterns can have a negative impact on the park".

Referring to the decision of Geneva city authorities, project coordinator Stefan Kristensen stated he has no doubt in the success of the project. “This is an important step, and we are satisfied”, he said.

He highlighted that political motives are left behind the complaints. “It is painful and shocking to see that people here support the deniers”, he stated.
