US Congressman: It’s time US President and Government recognize Armenian Genocide

YEREVAN, APRIL 28, ARMENPRESS. Even 100 years after the Genocide, there is a deep pain in the hearts of the Armenian people, as long as genocide and gross human rights violations remain war methods in the 21st century. “Armenpress” reports U.S. Representative of Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District David Cicilline made this announcement at the U.S. Congress.

“W4e hear about extreme human right violations in different parts of the world almost every week. The first step to stop them is to recognize them, and for that reason it is important that the U.S. Government recognizes the Armenian Genocide and call it in its real name, a coordinated attempt by the Ottoman Empire to eliminate the Armenian people”, the democrat congressman mentioned.

Cicilline also stated that today the Armenian people face numerous challenges. “We all know that at the beginning of this month violence in Nagorno Karabakh again erupted. It is extremely important that the U.S. continues to remain engaged in the settlement of this conflict”, the American legislator said.

According to him, continuing the current efforts of the U.S. aimed at the settlement of the current conflict, at the same time, it is important that the necessity of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S.A. is underlined. “The history is clear. 101 years ago 1.5 million Armenians were exterminated in a coordinated manner in the Ottoman Empire. It is not an opinion, comment or accusation, it is a fact”, Cicilline said.

He quoted the writ of the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire dating July 10, 1915, which calls the persecution of Armenians “a coordinated attempt to cut the roots of peaceful Armenian population”. 101 years later it is time that the U.S. President and the Government recognize this reality as the first genocide of the 20th century”, David Cicilline sated.

Concluding his speech, the congressman quoted Francis Pope as saying “Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it!”
