Yerevan bestseller 4/8: Armenian readers prefer Coelho

YEREVAN, APRIL 15, ARMENPRESS. This week’s ranking of “Armenpress” news agency’s “Yerevan bestseller” is led by "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez. “People are not always born the day their mothers bring them to the world: Life forces them to be reborn many times”, this is the philosophy of the novel. It was translated to Armenian by Frunzik Kirakosyan.

Mark Aren’s “Where wild roses bloom” novel is 2nd in the list. This is the second novel of the author which describes the inner world of an Armenophobic Turkish former serviceman, when he, already an old man, suddenly hears a lullaby song that reminds him of his mother and later finds out that the song is in Armenian: realizing his parents were Armenians. The same former serviceman spends his remaining life searching the graves of his parents, without knowing that it was a misunderstanding.

Milan Kundera's most famous work, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” is 3rd. The book chronicles the fragile nature of an individual's fate, theorizing that a single lifetime is insignificant in the scope of the concept of eternal return. In an infinite universe, everything is guaranteed to recur infinitely.

Experienced legislator and politician, late Vahan Hovhannisyan’s first detective genre novel “Mandilion” is ranked 4th this week. The story takes place on a broad historical background during different eras.

“The Alchemist” by Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho comes next in the list. The novel is about having a dream and the dedication to making it come true, coupled with love, kindness and the ability to recognize a new country.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez is 6th. The novel was translated from Russian into Armenian by Ruben Hovsepyan and the “Bookinist” publishing house presented the new edition.

“The Autumn of the Patriarch” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is 7th.  

“1984” by George Orwell is the 8th on the list. Till this day, the book is banned in many countries.

“Adultery” is a novel by Paulo Coelho, it is ranked 9th. It is the sixteenth major book by Coelho, and touches on the theme of adultery. 

“Manuscript Found in Accra” by Paulo Coelho is ranked 10th.

To complete the bestseller list, the following bookshops have participated in the survey: “New Book” (093-60-40-64), “Noah’s Ark” (56-81-84), “Armenian Book” (54-07-06), “Narek” (51-91-36), “Bookinist” (53-74-13), “Antares” (091-90-01-23) and “Zangak” (23-25-28).
