Yerevan bestseller 4/4: Armenian readers prefer Aren, Wilde, Coelho, Nietzsche …

YEREVAN, MARCH 18, ARMENPRESS. This week’s ranking of the "Armenpress" news agency’s "Yerevan bestseller" project is led by Mark Aren's "Where the Wild Roses Bloom”. This is the second novel of the author which describes the inner world of an Armenophobic Turkish former serviceman, when he, already an old man, suddenly hears a lullaby song that reminds him of his mother and later finds out that the song is in Armenian: realizing his parents were Armenians. The same former serviceman spends his remaining life searching the graves of his parents, without knowing that it was a misunderstanding.

“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green comes second in the ranking. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, “The Fault in Our Stars” is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

English writer Oscar Wilde’s novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, which is considered one of his most significant works, is ranked 3rd.It is one of the most read books in the world. The plot of the novel focuses on the main character selling his soul to the devil, and in return getting eternal youth, beauty and power.

Edgar Harutyunyan's "Art of Devotion or Ode to Rose" is ranked 4th.

"The Alchemist" by Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho is ranked 5th. According to AFP, it has sold more than 65 million copies in 56 different languages, becoming one of the best-selling books in history and setting the Guinness World Record for most translated book by a living author. 

"Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel García Márquez is ranked 6th. “People are not always born the day their mothers bring them to the world: Life forces them to be reborn many times”, this is the philosophy of the novel. It was translated to Armenian by Frunzik Kirakosyan.

Georgian prominent writer Otar Chiladze’s “The Basket” is a saga-novel, overtly portraying 'empire of evil', its consequences and a long journey of Georgian society and culture. It has won the top literary award SABA as the best novel of the year.

“Thus spoke Zarathustra” by Friedrich Nietzsche is a novel which summons up the German philosopher’s basic views by poetic inspirations. It was published in Armenian in 2002.

 “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson is 9th. It is one of the most read books in the world. “Who Moved My Cheese” shows the need for finding the language and tools to deal with change--an issue that makes all of us nervous and uncomfortable. Most people are fearful of change because they don't believe they have any control over how or when it happens to them. Since change happens either to the individual or by the individual, Spencer Johnson shows that what matters most is the attitude we have about change.

American well-known writer Ray Bradbury’s “Martian Chronicles” concludes the ranking. It is considered as one of the best books of the 20th century. As Astronomer Carl Sagan once noticed, “Mars is a kind of mythical arena, where our earthly hopes and fears are incarnated.”
