Beyonce and Coldplay criticized for “Hymn for the Weekend”video

YEREVAN, JANUARY 30, ARMENPRESS. The newly released video of Beyonce and Coldplay “Hymn for the Weekend” is spurring controversy. “Armenpress” reports the aforementioned citing The Boombox.

The Ben Mor-directed visual was filmed in Mumbai, India and shows some major love to the culture — including a cameo from Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor. There’s also a nod to Holi, the South Asian festival of colors ,as kids throw the colorful powder on Coldplay’s leading man, Chris Martin.

But some of the images have gotten criticism for what some feel is cultural appropriation.

Bey wears a traditional headscarf — typically for women who want to show modesty — and in the next scene, Queen B dons a dress with a revealing neckline. There isn’t anything wrong with showing off cleavage — but the stark contradiction can be interpreted as a lack of respect for the traditional garb worn in the previous shot. She also does a hand gesture reserved for the Indian classical and spiritual dance, Bharatanatyam. And the jewelry headpiece — while beautiful — is similar to an adornment typically reserved for Indian women to wear on their wedding day. And since Bey is already very much married (Hey Jay Z), that may be inappropriate as well.
