Meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents to cause no major changes

Meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents to cause no major changes

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Arranging a meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan before the year ends will be a very important step, which will once again prove that Armenia is an advocate of a dialogue, and makes all efforts for peaceful negotiations in contrast to Azerbaijan which relies on its army and has a militaristic position on the settlement of the conflict.

This opinion belongs to political scientist Richard Kirakosyan. In an interview with “Armenpress” Kirakosyan states that despite of that very little can be expected from that meeting.

“We can hope but not expect. We can hope that this is an opportunity to de-escalate the tension and try to negotiate in diplomatic language”, Kirakosyan said.

He stresses that it is impossible to expect from similar meetings to bring signing of an agreement closer. “Whatever takes place during that meeting and irrespective of the extent of its constructiveness, it is obvious all three sides of the conflict, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh, are free to present their views. In this context, Azerbaijan bears maximalist positions and demands too much. Therefore, we cannot expect any real or significant process”, Kirakosyan said, adding that the current situation is dangerous in the sense that people die because of the ceasefire violation cases. “This is a very dangerous level of tension and precisely for that reason it is very important to proceed with diplomacy and put the solution of the conflict on the path of negotiations”, Kirakosyan said.

OSCE Minsk Group American Co-chair James Warlick announced during the regional visit that the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan expressed readiness to meet and discuss the situation on Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone.
